Week 15: Movie/Artist Compare & Contrast

I really enjoyed each documentary I got to watch and will probably watch them again. One of my favorites was the Crocker Bank commercial by Hal Riney and I just searched more about Ron English for fun!

Below: Crocker Bank Commercial by Hal Riney (Source: YouTube.)

I thought this commercial was genuis even though the bank did not last long.
Craft: To make the commercial Hal used video cameras. song writers to make a hit song, young actors, and a wedding theme.
Concept: The idea behind this was to excite young adults who were transitioning and just beginning their life to partner with an older bank. The commercial was made to motivate them through ideas of love, optimism, and excitement.
Composition: Immediately when the commercial starts the song starts and the wedding scene starts, to get the audience's attention immediately. The commerical starts with the song words, "You've only just begun" and ends wit the words "You've got a long way to go. We'd like to help you get there.". The commercial has a start and ending that goes together and gives the feel of a life cycle.

Below: Abraham Obama by Ron English. (Source:AbrahamObama.net)

Craft: Images of Abraham Lincoln and Barak Obama, Painted mural, Various colors,( Possibly Photo shop, and/or paper and tool for initial sketch)
Concept: Two prominent presidents put together to look like one image/man.
Composition: A majority of the image is an orginal Abraham Lincoln image with just the combined face of Obama and Lincoln.  The soft smile and bright colors add a more modern feel to the image. There's a light gradient in back of the image that makes the subject stand out more. Strong details in the wrinkles of the face, Obama's mole, and pieces of hair make the image appear more realistic.

Compare/Contrast
The subject of these pieces of art as well as the tools used are completely different. One artist used a video while the other used a painting. One piece of art has prominent figures while the other doesn't have prominent figures. However, one similarity is that the target audience is the same. Both pieces of art seemed to be targeted towards the younger/current/ and modern generation while still giving homage to the generation before. Both pieces of art truly target the creative and attention getting feel that is required for a younger audience.
As artists, Hal Riney seems a lot more traditional than Ron English. Hal Riney knows what captures the hearts of people. He knows that catchy songs and themes of love connect people to products or services.
On the other hand, Ron English knows that controversial topics, prominent figures, and bold colors captures the attention of audience members. Both artists connect with people on a different level, but leave a lasting impression.

Special Edition Blog

Craft:
This stair well area was created using various objects and textiles. The ones most noticeable are wood, glass, paint, carpet, water, fishes, leather, and marble.
Composition
The stair wrapped around three or four levels. At the top there was a window that was the shape of a leaf that let natrual sun light in. That shape was seen on every leave and led the bottom which was a pool of water with a seating area. This stairwell had so many elements that worked together from the top to the bottom.
Concept
Because of the shape of the leaf element of the stairwell and the pond at the bottom is made me think of nature and the complexity but simplicity of it.

Although this piece was not one of the paintings we looked at as a masterpiece I considered the masterpiece of the entire museum. For one, it allows people to participate in it's structure and take viewers on a journey to figuring out all that it encompasses. The consistently of the leaf shape from top to bottom, although in different forms was captivating. Even the bottom pool of water was catered towards people with the seating area., so viewers always felt involved. The stairwell was innovative, creative, and probably the one piece of art or structure that doesn't change the most in the museum. This is why it was my choice as, masterpiece.

Week 7: Illustration: Variation

Craft
I used AI, two different paint brush tools, the monochromatic color settings, other colors from the wheel, the eye dropper tool, and shapes.
Composition
The first two change were simple I changed the color to monochromatic and with the other I added red and blue into the image and added lines and stars through the shape tools for the background. For the second row, I used a paint brush found in the data base at a very low level to create a slight change. I also played around with the color wheel to change the color. For the third row of images I used a paint brush that created an outline around Michelle and border that looked like a skyline or buildings, I had to play around with the intensity of the paintbrush to get this effect. I also changes the colors to make the images distinctly different with slight color change and extreme color change. I composed all the images in grid form because they are to be looked at together and also separately. The assignment was for us to use slight changes and extreme changes in the paint brush and also in the colors. I wanted to use brushes and colors that created a change, but not too much of a change so that Michelle was still identifiable.
Concept
A few of the images really had conceptually meaning. The last image in the first row was created with red, white, blue to represent America. I also incorporated lines and stars from the American flag. I also used red, white, and blue in the second row. For the last row, the brush that created a skyline was used because Michelle Obama is from Chicago and still strongly advocates for inner city issues.

Week 6: Illustration Revision

After a class critique and observing how others were accomplishing a 3D effect with their pictures, I realized what I was doing wrong. I had to use the zoom tool to zoom all the way into specific areas of the image. I literally had to take away my knowledge of certain facial features and body parts and only focus on the light and dark areas of the face.
Craft
I began to use the pencil tool as my main tool. My next main tool was the eye dropper tool.
Composition
I used the pencil tool because it allowed me to trace random splotches on the object easily. The eye dropper tool allowed me to take color right from the face to fill the areas circled and create more of an accuracy. I moved the shapes I created around a little more with this revision to try and create an accurate representation.
Concept:
Same as original post.

Week 5- Illustration: Shape Drawing

CRAFT
I copied a picture from an online source and placed it into an AI document. I made the image less visible with the opacity tool so that it was easier to trace. Then I begin to use the vector point tool and pencil tool to paint in various shades of blacks and whites on the image. I also used the gradient tool.

COMPOSITION
Because the image was black and white it would appear to be easier to find the light and dark areas, but it did have its challenges. I chose an image that mainly showed Michelle's face because I wanted that to be the focus. The vector tool and pencil tool were most effective in tracing the light and dark areas although on this draft I was not as detailed!

CONCEPT
I chose Michelle because she is someone that I look up to and I wanted the image to to shown her a different, softer tone. She is not as easily recognizable as some other people but, she does have very strong features, that if captured right clearly make her known.

Week 4: Color & Texture

Craft
I used Adobe Illustrator, a bamboo pen and tablet tool and various objects like a cross fixture, glass and headphones. In Adobe Illustrator I used the marker in sizes from 1 to 30.
Composition
For the color drawings I focused on using different values of one color. I used vertical and horizontal lines to create dimensional images of the items. The lighter strokes represented areas where the light was most visible. For the texture drawings, I used numbers, letters, and hearts as repeatedly in three different values of one color. The symbols were used repeatedly in different sizes to create a splattered background. The actual items were also created out of the same symbol as the background with a contrasting color.

Concept
For most of the creations I just chose random items and symbols to create them. The creation that I put the most thought in concept wise was the cross. I created the cross with red paint to symbolize blood and a gold background to symbolize royalty. The cross and background was made of heart symbols to represent love.

Week 3: Shading

Craft
I used Adobe Illustrator's paint brush and a bamboo and pen tablet to draw these vessels. My first step was to create the overall shape of the image and then focusing on details.
Composition
I used shades of grey, black, and white colors. I drew in only horizontal and vertical lines with varies point sizes. I used lighter colors to put emphasis on areas that the light especially hit. This style of drawing and shadowing have a 3D effect and showed qualities of light vs. darkness.
Concept
I used empty vessels as the subject.

Week 2: Vessels Drawings

CRAFT
I used the AI program, a bamboo tablet, and the pen tool to create. Before creating the images I practiced using the pen tool by scribbling on the blank canvas.
COMPOSITION
I placed the vessel images at the center of the page so they could be the main focus and I used a medium size pen because that was what was easiest to work with. I only used lines in a horizontal or vertical direction to create the shapes. I also used various colors at random that did not necessarily reflect the colors of the image.
CONCEPT
This assignment was used to practice using the pen tool, get more of an idea of light vs. dark, and learn how to create 3D images of various vessels.
